Questions?

If you have a specific question,

How does the Billings Ovulation Method works?

The method is based on the primary observation of sensation at the vulva. This sensation is produced by the presence or absence of cervical mucus. The woman should be able to notice the sensation and describe it. If any discharge is seen, she is to describe its appearance. By tracking these observations, she can learn to recognize a pattern of infertility, possible fertility and Ovulation.

Why is sexual abstinence required?

When first learning the method:

Abstinence is required so the woman can learn to recognize the sensation at the vulva and to be able to describe it, as well as any discharge that she may see. -This way the Basic Infertile Pattern (BIP), can be established.

Periodic abstinence on days of possible fertility

When Avoiding Pregnancy: Once the BIP is established, when there is any interruption on the Infertile pattern, abstinence is required to be able to recognize a Peak of fertility which is an indicator of ovulation, then the Peak Rule can be Applied.

The woman Ovulate only one day of the cycle and the ovum survives no longer than 24 hrs.  During BIP sperms dies quickly, however, sperm cells can be kept alive for up to 5 days on a fertile mucus, (during the pattern of fertility).

When Achieving Pregnancy: Once the BIP has been stablished, abstinence is required to be able to identify the days of fertility for achieving pregnancy.

Why is it important to attend Follow Up appointments?

Periodic follow up is necessary to obtain confidence and the knowledge of your fertility or infertility signals. It is important that you learn to correctly apply the rules for postponing or achieving pregnancy.

How can a woman Monitor her Reproductive Health?

When a woman learns the method, it will allow her to recognize what observations of fertility, infertility and ovulation are normal for her.  This way she will be able to recognize anything different that may alert her of pathologies.
